North Goa, if given the opportunity, creates the perfect setting for a memorable family trip.

A Treat for Nature Buffs

If your children are nature lovers or bird enthusiasts, Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorao Island is your go-to destination. Located along the Mandovi River, this lush mangrove habitat is home to a range of local and migratory birds across an area close to 2 sq km. Be sure to carry a pair of binoculars to spot various birds such as the kingfisher, herons, forest owlet, egrets, and the green munia.  There are various vantage points from which you can observe the vibrant birdlife–2 watchtowers, from the ground, or by boat, along the river. The two watchtowers, one standing tall at 20 meters while the other is 10 meters, offer a panoramic view of the sanctuary. It is open to the public from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, throughout the week. Commence your visit early morning so as not to miss out on spotting different birds going about their day.

For Those Who Appreciate Art

A creative approach to your itinerary includes a visit to the Museum of Goa (MOG) situated in Pilerne, a village hailing from the Bardez taluka. It is a contemporary art space that conducts exhibitions dedicated to exploring and narrating the past, present, and future of Goa, physically as well as digitally. Established in 2015, the museum has hosted over 400 artists and displayed over 1500 artworks. There have been various exhibitions, educational tours, and events conducted in this space with the vision to make art accessible and an integral part of everyone’s lives. It is an educational as well as engaging tour for children as well as adults, fostering interesting discussions about culture and art.

A Retreat for History Buffs

If your children show an inclination to enjoy history, then a visit to Old Goa, the former capital of Goa, should be on top of your list. There are several iconic landmarks to visit in Old Goa. The Basilica of Bom Jesus was built in 1605 using Baroque design and is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its architecture. It also houses the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier, which are displayed every ten years. This exposition draws visitors and devotees from across the globe. Additionally, St. Xavier’s life is depicted across the walls of the church through paintings. Having visited the Basilica of Bom Jesus, one can take a leisurely walk and visit the churches, convents, or chapels located in Old Goa like Se Cathedral, and Church of St Francis de Assisi and the ruins of the Church of St. Augustine, each with an enthralling story of its own.

The Archaeological Museum is housed in the convent adjoining the Church of St. Francis of Assisi with an interesting peek into Goa’s history. There are eight galleries showcasing artifacts from Portuguese rule, including portraits of Goa’s viceroys and governors, religious artifacts, and stamps, alongside treasures from prehistoric and medieval periods.

Another noteworthy destination is the Museum of Christian Art (MoCA), located in the 17th-century Convent of Santa Monica near St. Augustine Tower. Established in 1994, the museum highlights the fusion of European and Indian artistry, with a collection of 16th-century artifacts crafted by skilled local artisans. It underwent extensive modernisation and was reopened in May 2022, ensuring the visit is even more fascinating today.

No trip to Goa is complete without exploring its serene beaches like Baga, Calangute, Candolim, and Morjim. These family-friendly spots are perfect for setting up a beach picnic, enjoying fresh seafood at the shacks, or indulging in thrilling water sports activities. Children and adults alike can have a fun day out at the beach participating in water sports like banana boat rides, dolphin-watching boat trips, or jet-skiing. Make certain to book with certified operators and follow all safety precautions, including wearing life jackets and helmets. Do not forget to carry enough water, hats or umbrellas, and sunscreen.
