Where to Go Kayaking in Goa

Where to Go Kayaking in Goa

Goa is often associated with its bustling night markets, coastline of beaches with exhilarating beach sports, and vibrant nightlife. Kayaking is a great way to explore some of the less frequented but mesmerising parts of Goa with its lush green landscapes, water bodies, and wildlife. It’s an activity that allows you to connect with and appreciate nature while gliding through the serene rivers, picturesque mangroves, and lush breakwater at your own pace. It is an activity that even beginners can try their hand at, whether solo or with friends and family or even a corporate team, and can be quite the bonding experience.

What’s even better is that this activity does not have any restrictions owing to the weather. One can kayak year-round as most of the routes are along calmer river waters. However, in the event of storms or heavy rains during the monsoons, the tours get cancelled as a safety precaution.  All one has to do is book your slot in advance, turn up at the meetup spot with a bottle of water and change of clothes, get briefed on the safety precautions and any other important information by the instructor, and gear up with a life jacket and boat paddles.

Cola Beach Backwaters

Cola Beach is one of the more secluded and less frequented beaches with a tranquil lagoon surrounded by lush greenery and rays of the sun filtering through. One is sure to spot beautiful birds chirping, like herons and kingfishers. The water is quite shallow, making kayaking at this spot very beginner-friendly. These tours commence in the morning and go on till late afternoon and typically last for about an hour. The guide will provide a few instructions and safety measures that need to be followed.

Sal Backwaters

The Sal River is a famous river running through South Goa. Its backwaters are a network of lagoons and creeks that offer a stunning route that starts from Cavelossim. Numvem is another known entry point so make sure to research the operators available and the proximity to the locations from the accommodation.

Paddle through its narrow waterways lined with tropical plants and mangroves. Enjoy wildlife sightings of birds like kingfishers, ducks, cormorants, egrets, herons, and ibis as the majestic sun sets, casting hues of yellow, orange, pink, or purple in the sky. One may even get a chance to spot otters and large flying bats along the banks. The duration of the trip ranges anywhere from one to two hours, making it a perfect relaxing yet adventurous addition to your day.

Nerul River

Those staying or vacationing in North Goa like Calangute, Candolim, or Baga can opt to kayak along the Nerul River, also known as Spike’s River. Despite being located in the crowded tourist hotspots of Goa, the river is a great and easily accessible destination for a peaceful escape with its calm waters and lush surroundings. The kayaking session usually lasts for about an hour, allowing one to indulge in other activities like dining at a renowned restaurant or visiting the beaches for the rest of the day. Be sure to pay attention to the instructor during the orientation session and put on a life jacket and helmet for safety precautions.

Mandovi River

Those in Panjim City or nearby can enjoy an immersive kayaking experience along the Mandovi River around the mangrove-lined backs of the Cambarjua Canal or Chorao Island. Birdwatching enthusiasts can opt for kayaking along Chorao Island as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is located on the island, providing the unique opportunity of spotting birds like white egrets, kingfishers, and purple herons. Alternatively, one of the key highlights of gliding past the mangroves of Cambarjua Canal is possibly spotting crocodiles in their natural habitat. Keep cameras handy to capture these moments. Most sessions last anywhere from one to a half hours and cater to all skill levels.

Kayaking is a recommended activity to explore the quieter, more serene side that Goa has to offer.
